Between palm groves and minarets, a masterpiece of Saharan harmony
In the heart of the northern desert, the M'Zab valley emerges like a mirage of order and spirituality. In Ghardaïa, everything is geometry, silence and light. It's a city built to last, to resist, to adapt.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Founded by the Ibadites in the 11th century, Ghardaïa is the spiritual and commercial center of a confederation of five fortified towns: Ghardaïa, Beni Isguen, Melika, Bou Noura and El Atteuf. This unique community system, listed by UNESCO in 1982, is based on solidarity, ecology and equality. Each ksar is centered around a mosque, surrounded by spiral houses, with urban planning adapted to the heat and water management (foggaras). The valley is a model of human adaptation to the desert climate.

  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Mild and pleasant, perfect for sightseeing
  • Spring (March-May): Ideal season, moderate climate
  • Summer (June-August): Very hot (+40°C), except for experienced travelers
  • Autumn (Sept.-Nov.): Fine weather, ideal for exploring the ksour
  • From Algiers: scheduled flights or bus (9–10h)
  • On site: shared cabs, minibus or recommended local guide
  • On foot only in the ksour (traditional pedestrian zones)

  • Ask permission before taking photos of people
  • Respect areas forbidden to non-Muslims
  • Buy from local artisans to support the Mozabite economy
  • Avoid touching or damaging fragile adobe walls
