Tiaret, between steppe and millennial memory
Nestling in the heights of the Tellian Atlas, Tiaret --- which means "station of the lions" in Berber --- is a little-known historical and natural crossroads, where tradition, spirituality and striking landscapes come together. A town of horsemen, zaouïas and djebels, its character unfolds along its winding roads, ancient tombs and farmers' markets.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Occupied since prehistoric times, Tiaret was a major Berber capital under the Rostémides (8th-10th centuries), the first Islamic Ibadite state in North Africa. Its name figures on the great caravan routes linking the Maghreb to the Sahara. The region boasts megalithic necropolises, royal tombs (Djeddars) and early Christian remains that are unique in North Africa. Over time, Tiaret also became a Mecca for Sufism and horse breeding.
